Reflection on the week

For this week we have filmed a lot of what we need in the day time and are on the process of editing in now. Whilst doing this we are planning our next bit of filming for the night time footage in the woods. We have set the time for this Sunday at around 7ish to get the lighting that we need. Also we have the cast and they now know where they are going and when for. I am going to be updating my blog as I go along to make sure that I am in order and organised with what we are doing.

Our next filming plan

This weekend we have decided to do more filming in the day time and get the footage we need for that over and done with. We will take our leading girl (Rosa) to do her part in the woods and also the couple part in the town with me and Rosa to do that day time filming. The only crops that we will need is the clothing of both me and Rosa. The time we will do it will be about midday to one. This is when we feel that the light will be the best and also make it look realistic in town with the amount of the people  that will be there, making the shopping look like a real experience.

Our First Filming

Throughout the weekend we have rounded up the equipment, such as the camera and a tripod and started filming our first few scenes of our music video. we decided to go to Formby beach to get a few establishing shots for the very start of our video. we decided to go twice, once in the morning and another in the night. This is because we wanted to play around with the light a bit to see what was best for our video. Me and my partner, Scott both had a go at holding the camera and trying different shots that can go into the video. We feel that some of the footage is very weak, as the lighting and positioning, just didn't work for us. However there are also shots that we have got which may use for our actual video which is a great result. We plan to go to other venues such as the woods in Formby and town this weekend to get more much more footage that we can use, but this was definitely a good start.

Planning Camera Shots

The first five scenes that we will shoot are going to be establishing shots of the scenery in Formby such as the beach and the woods to get a feel for the environment of the film, straight away in the first 5 seconds. After this we will see our character for the first time which will be a mid shot of her waist up to show her clear expression and also background fitted in. As the music progresses we will be using more shots to expresses her feelings and expression such as close ups and more mid shots, however we will be adding a few long shots to show the environment and the setting that she is in, so the viewers get a full idea of where she is and how alone she is. When it goes back to the past and darker, we use a various amount of different shots and angles to get a wider idea of the dancing and the movement of the actors some low and some high, to create the idea of speed and diversity. This process continues as we see the man and woman in the shopping centre together.

First Draft of the Website

This is the first draft of our website for our DJ, Existence. We wanted it to be very colourful and have a good interactivity with the public that will be very easy to navigate. we will have pages such as News, Biography and more. More posts will appear to show the development of this website.

First copy of the Locations within our video

Below will be the list of places that we want to look at for the shooting of our film. They will be explained what we will use them for and the tome of day we need them.

  • Formby beach/woods: This will be the main setting for our video. This is where the main dancing/partying will be happening. Because of this we will need to shoot in the day around 11am and then a bit later but not too dark so around 6 pm. In the morning the shots will show just the girl looking into the scenes of when she had the time with the "wild boy". Later on when its dark we will film that night that they had and we will be going back and forth to present and past. The beach will mainly be used for the setting and effect of how alone she is at the start in the present day. But the woods will be used for the party and the main location.

  • Liverpool town (Bold street - possibly): This will be for the second part of the song. We will again show the girl on her own looking glum thinking about the time she had with her ex boyfriend and how much she misses him. The time will the shift to when they are enjoying life and are happy together, smiling and such. We don't want to see the rush of Liverpool with the flood of people that it attracts, so because of this we have decided to go to do the footage fairly early.

Props for our video

Below is the first list of props that we will need to create our music video and beside the prop, the place or person we will acquire it from:
-Camera - Matthew Fawcett
-Tripod - Matthew Fawcett
-Tents
-Campfire (Logs, fire starters)
-Bottles - Supermarket
-Flare - Online
-Bags - Our own and friends
- Sleeping bags, Sleeping mat
-Chairs

Our Logo

This is our chosen logo for our artist, Existence. We have decided to keep it very simple and remunerable to anyone who sees the "Big X". When researching other house artists we have noticed that they all keep it very simple and not go to extreme in terms of design. Avicii's is just 2 triangles side by side and Hardwell is just his name in bold text. So it was just an easy choice to keep Existence's logo very cute design.

Start of the Story board

This is the first 21 seconds of our video story board that we have sat down and discussed. The first 15 seconds of the video is just soft slow music so we are going to shoot 5 different stills just to get the viewer knowing the setting and what is about to come, also it will illustrate how deserted the setting is and that the girl is alone. Then, when the music and vocals kick in, we see our main character firstly just looking on in to the woods and then a closer angle of  where she is looking. This is just the start of our storyboard and we will post regularly with updates.

Existence T Shirt

This is the first merchandise that we have created for our artist. We have kept this simple and easy for the design of our T Shirt. We want the fans to be able to see this big X and link it straight away to Existence. This simple design will feature on most of the merchandise we make so that the symbol is linked with the artist as soon as possible.

House Moodboard

This is the mood board that I have created for my chosen genre soft house. The pictures that I have included help me know what type of artist I am hoping to create in this project as they allow me to see what it is like to be an artist and also the equipment. As you can see in the mood board they are usually followed by a huge crowd who follow them and listen to their music. Also the colour is a big part of the genre as I feel you can see in this picture, as the bright lights are used to harmonise with the music. the decks that they use are very common as well for a DJ of course as that's how they produce there music and develop on it within the concert. So I will have to make sure that I include that when I create my own artist. when looking at the artist I see a confident person who tries his best to get the audience to have a good time. He would use his enthusiasm and excitement to get the crowd on his side and to appreciate and enjoy their music. so that what I have took from this mood board.

Possible Initial concept pitch

So recently we decided that our song for the video will be Avicii's 'Dear Boy' and we have had a detailed discussion about what to include in our music video.  The first thing that we had to decide was whether it was going to be performance, narrative or concept. So when we looked at the music videos based in our music genre we noticed that most of them has a narrative throughout the video but is common that we do see the artist and we see a glimpse of a performance, so that is an idea we want to include. We believe that this song is about a girl who is suffering from a relationship that she has with a boy in her past. She now explains to us that she wants him back and envy's him. We want the video to show the girl morning over the boy showing her suffering whilst also showing their past times when she sings it in the song.  Within the song there are very nice links that I feel you can make from lyrics in a song to a scene in a video. Lyrics such as "Go dance in the woods", we want to have a male in the woods and has arrived at a campfire and starts to dance with the girl singing this song. Another link that we see in the chorus

"Oh dear boy, I wanna follow you,
You're a wild boy, I am a wild girl too.
Oh dear boy, it's so hollow without you
In a world with everything but it won't do."

Here we want to expand on the lyrics of wild boy and wild girl, by having the characters obviously doing something wild. Something such as punching and throwing with anger.

Dear Boy Lyrics

So bold and fine
I've known you for some time
Whole life changed while,
Bones like yours and mine
Go dance in the woods, and
Down we go, down, down.
Do you remember old times?

Oh dear boy, I wanna follow you,
You're a wild boy, I am a wild girl too.
Oh dear boy, it's so hollow without you
In a world with everything but it won't do.

Oh dear boy, I wanna follow you,
You're a wild boy, I am a wild girl too.
Oh dear boy, it's so shallow will love do,
It's a time for everything and I call you.

Sweet love of mine, destruction ain't a crime.
For those who find love as a game like you and I.
Go dance in the waters of all the tears we've cried.
Oh boy, you're fine, do you remember old times?

Oh dear boy, I wanna follow you,
You're a wild boy, I am a wild girl too.
Oh dear boy, it's so hollow without you
In a world with everything but it won't do.

Oh dear boy, I wanna follow you,
You're a wild boy, I am a wild girl too.
Oh dear boy, it's so shallow will love do,
It's a time for everything and I call you.

Choice of artist and song explained

When we decided to create a music video in the house genre we had to decide on an artist and song choice for what we would perform to and create in our video. At first we started thinking of our favourite DJ's because if it wasn't someone we like there would be no point in producing their song into a music video. So we started listening to songs from artists such as Calvin Harris, Tiesto, Hardwell and Avicii. After listening to many songs by each artist we felt that Avicii was the most suited to the type of music video we want to produce. this is because Avicii's songs have a good mix of beat and melody to lyrics with meaning. We wanted to produce a narrative video as I feel that is more technical and shows more skill to produce a story of music through a video, so choosing Avicii was down to this. Then we had to look at his songs but had to be careful because his latest album 'true' was extremely popular and created music videos from a number of singles in that album. hit songs such as 'Hey Brother' and 'Wake Me Up' where formed into music videos so we clearly couldn't pick them songs. So we started to look at other songs that we enjoyed in that album. One of the main songs that we enjoyed from the start was the hit 'Dear Boy'. So we started to listen to the song with the lyrics in front of us to see if we could have an idea of what we could do with the song. We thought it fitted in very well as the song fitted in to what we had initially thought. So we have decided to produce the music video for the song.

Avicii album cover analysis

Chase & Status Album artwork analysis

This is Chase and Status’ debut album: More Than Alot- released 2008
It is a good example of a simple yet effective CD cover. The graphics in the background are done in a graffiti style which supports the UK Garage and street origins of Drum and Bass music. In the pink graffiti are images of the two producers and some graphic drips.

Over this image is the mask of the words ‘More Than Alot’ and the Chase and Status logo in the centre.

The pink and black are extremely contrasting colours and the colour outside the lettering is plain white. This is good because normally CD covers have the album artwork across the whole cover and the words in plain letters but in this case the Producers names and the Album title is the artwork and this is emphasized by the plain background. There is no other detail on the front of the cover other than the title and logo so the album is immediately recognizable.

Chase & Status Music Video analysis

This song/video was published on June 4th 2013 by Mercury Records Ltd.
The location of this video appears to be in a Motel in an area of America.  The storyline follows a criminal running from the law who is hiding out in the motel.  We're lead to believe that the police arrive due to a heated argument between two motorists that have had an accident.
At first it seems there is no relation between the video and the lyrics.  However, a repeated lyric within the song goes, "im never gonna let you go, im never gonna let you down.  The heart has taken control, theres no one around".  Looking more closely, this lyric relates to the young girl.  Once the male criminal has been arrested, the young girl who we can assume may be his daughter, if not, then she may have some relation to him, she is lead outside by a female officer.  At this moment, she grabs the gun and holds up the police, freeing the male.  This may suggest that SHE will never let him go, never let him down and that her heart has taken over control of her mind.

However, the video then rejects this as we realise that the young girl is actually the girl from the missing person poster at the beginning of the video.  Therefore leading us to believe that the male has in fact been holder her hostage.

Once again the lighting within the video is mostly natural but it camera appears to have been filtered to give a cleaner tint.  The shots taken inside are darker with low key lighting.  This shows us that something of a darker nature may be taking place inside, relating to the storyline of the girl being held captive.

This video uses one take.  The camera is hand held however it is position on a gyroscope to keep it steady.  It uses a tracking shot to show a journey throughout the hectic scene in which we find ourselves.  The video uses panning shots to swing around corners keeping us on our toes and making us unaware of what is going on.  This technique nicely link us "the audience" into the storyline.  It presents us with a feeling that we are also looking for the criminal and missing girl, as well as the police, as the camera travels and searches around the scene.

There is a sense of sexism or voyeurism within this video.  At the beginning we see that the male character is shouting at the female character about the car accident.  The female character appears stunned and confused.

We then lead upstairs around the rooms of the motel.  Once again we're leading into a room follow a female maid.  Suggesting this lower sort for job is done by a female "housewife".

This is also suggested at the very start as the is another female maid serving guests at the tables.  Shortly after, the male criminal enters the room and is arrested.  We then learn that he was holding the female, missing person, captive.  This again shows a dominance of the male character over the female character in this scene.  Finally, were lead outside.  Male offices appear strong, arresting and tackling the criminal.

Whilst the female officer plays the emotional role looking to comfort the missing girl.

This shortly enhance as we see it is then the female officer who is taken hostage, whilst the male officers still appear strong and in control of the situation with guns drawn.  However, this subverts when it is the missing girl who took the female officer hostage and freed the male criminal.

MVAs (Music Video Awards)

The Music Video Awards started up by MTV in 1984 to award the best Music Videos of that year. although the event is to celebrate the video, year upon year it is ruined by a event that is very controversial and has the public speaking more about that event that the awards itself. The event is usually hosted in New York and Los angelies but in recent years they have moved along to florida and las vegas. The event is named the Super Bowl for the attraction of youth. Some of the crazy events that took place where 1985 Michael Jackson snogging his girl friend. When looking into our own genre, Dance we saw that the winner was "Stay the Night" by Zedd Featuring Hayley Williams.

UK music video awards

The UK music video awards are an annual event to celebrate the most innovative and creative videos to accompany their music around the UK. Starting in 2008 the UKMVA looked at many different awards to be granted to the different professionals working with music videos. The catagoties went from the different genres and creativity to adverts and even an best international video. Even a chance for the upcoming stars to have a feel of limelight. With the UKMVA the option to go online and enter someone you feel is best is there, meaning if you have a friend with a brilliant music video, even they are counted and looked at to win an award, all voted my the UKMVA jury. The best pop video was awarded to Alesha Dixon for her performance in "A boy does nothing".

Our name for our DJ

We had a few ideas of names that we could use for our DJ because there are different types of names such as a normal name like Calvin Harris and Martin Garix, then there's the one sharp words to remember the name such as Avicii and Hardwell. Finally the easy option is the name starting with DJ like DJ Fresh. We felt that the best name would be the one word wonders that people would remember.
Some that we got where
-detour
-excile
-turmoil
In the end we had an idea that the background of the DJ would be rough and had troubles with depression, even considered suicide. So using that story we wanted to have a link. So we though it the name of "Existence" as he is thankful for life and the music saved him for the depression and that's what we wanted to put in the name of the DJ.

The History of Music Videos

Music videos have been transformed and created into a whole new media today, with the aim to entertain and promote their new music. Today it's more about selling the star and being very controversial at times but it never used to be quite the same way. The first appearance of music being partnered with film was in the 1890s with the "little lost child" being released when a story was told in the company on a soft tune following in the scenes.
Littlelostchildsheetmusic.jpg
This followed for the first few years of the 20th century until the 20s/30s when musicals started to appear in the towns of Britain and America. This included the musical films, arrival of 'talkies' and screen songs where introduced to the world. one of the most famous musicals was Grease created in 1978. for the music video of the song "you are the one that I want" they have just took out and placed part of the movie straight in to the music video. This was possibly done to give more familiarity to the music video. Then was the rise of television in the 50s and 60s. This was the prime for bands such as the Beatles and the Elvis. The Beatles used this very well to promote their image and plainly just to let their fans, the people who buy their songs, know what they look like. This was also done through promotional films in the mid sixties which let the world know who The Beatles where and what they looked like. Then one of the key rise to the music videos was the development of MTV - Music Television.

This opened up the gate for a flood of music videos, which is exactly what happened. The launch of MTV saw the video of the hit 'Video killed the Radio Star' which fitted in very well for the occasion. The 80s was a revelation for music videos and they kept coming bigger and better. The huge 'Thriller' by Michael Jackson was one of the first music video that was worth millions and it showed. The amount of effort from routine to make up was a big transformation to what it once was in the early 20th century. Also in the 80s was the release of animation with Sledgehammer was all done with animation won 8 VMAs for the work out into it. 1986 saw the release of the most expensive music video created with Scream by Michael and Janet Jackson. The video was directed by Mark Rominec, the famous film director. This was another reason to how much music videos has expanded. Then the most expensive music video was created by Mark Rominec, for Michael Jackson of course. This was in 1995 with his hit single "Scream" that he created with his sister Janet Jackson which cost Rominec a huge $7 million, showing how much music videos where starting to become an industry for all artists.

This was then when the arrival of YouTube in 2005 became the starting point for every music video to be viewed by millions on the Internet. Almost every chart topping single in the last decade has been viewed by millions and all possible because of YouTube. Today the most viewed video on YouTube is a music video! and that was by PSY with his hit "Gangnam Style" which got a whopping 2,093,306,103 views! This was massive for Music video and now music video has grown in to a huge industry that no one would ignore any more.

Carol Varnallis

Narrative;
- Firstly she believes that the music video is a visual response to the music
- There is not necessarily a balance between narrative and Performance
- The narrative is not always complete - it may be a partial, fragmented narrative
- The structure of the video may appear disjointed
- Something drives the video forward, but often it is not the narrative. It could be the music, the performance, a mixture or some other element
- There may not always be a clear resolution (closure) at the end
- The video may pose questions that it doesn't actually answer
- There may be a narrative or theme running through the video, but in a montage style

Editing;

- Editing may match the musical phrases or the beat
- The video may break or disrupt many of the rules of continuity editing - this is a clear convention of music video editing.
- Editing may become foregrounded - the edits may be really obvious, to draw attention to themselves as opposed to invisible, continuity editing

For example, you may see;

- Jump cuts
- Breaks of the 30 degree rules
- Breaks of the 180 degree rule
- Cutting against the movement
- Cutting within the lyrics
- Fancy edits or cuts
- Extreme jump in time and space
- Extreme changes in pace
- Juxtaposed frames
- Graphic matches
- A style of editing that runs through the video and is distinctive to that video

You may not see;

- Smooth transitions
- Matches on action
- An even pace throughout

Diegesis;

- The diegesis may be revealed quite slowly
- Actions are not necessarily completed - they may be disrupted or interrupted in some way
- Character or object movements may move to the music
- There may be gaps in the audience's understanding of the diegesis - in time and space, music, performance and narrative
- Some frames may be more important than others
- There may be repetitions eg musical phrases, the beat, other musical elements, themes, lyrics, performance, images, colours, camera positions

Camera Movements and Framing;

- When it comes to shot types, extremes are very common.
- The style of framing and movement may run through the video and is distinctive to that video
- The camera may move in time with the music
- The camera may move on the lyrics
- The master shot (or establishing shots) is used frequently, as are close ups

Busted Prelim Task

What I Go To School For cut analysis

To make sure that I create a professional music video with my group I need to make sure that I look at other videos created by actual artists and how many shots and cuts they do within it. So I decided to watch the busted video 'What I Go To School For'. So I looked at the first 90 seconds of the video and and counted that there where 38 cuts into scenes which helps me when I create my music video because I'll know the standard professionals amount of a video. This helped me know what to expect.

Calvin Harris - Music Video Analysis

As a group we have decided to research and progress with the genre of soft house because we feel that is our favorite genre and we feel we will be able to produce a good video with soft house, mix between a beat usually with a bass drop and some lyrics aswell to compliment the music. But first I feel we have to analyse professional artists in our genre group such as Calvin Harris, Avicii and Chase and Status. My other group members are looking at 2 of the three but I'm looking at Calvin Harris.

Calvin Harris is a 30 year old, Scottish DJ of who was born with the name Adam Richard Wiles. his most recent Album "18 Months" earned huge praise and a number of singles shined within the charts when it was released on 12th October 2012. Famous singles such as 'Bounce', 'Feel So Close', 'I need your love' and much more that boomed in the charts in the previous year.

The first single I will analyse is "We'll be coming back" featuring Example.

The video features a robbery of a bag that we are unaware of the contents. When suddenly it goes into the near future showing them both driving through the mountains trying to find a place to hide the bag that they have stolen. Throughout the video we see them driving around together in these cars following the 'x' on a handheld map they are carrying, within around the middle to end of the video they get to dig up and hide this bag. However they are being followed by an masked motorcyclist who eventually catches up with them and handcuffs them, taking away the map with the x off them. We then see the thieves trying to go to the destination to find their bag that they had hidden, only to find that the bag has been dug up previous and taken away. The video then ends with the 2 victims turning round and we see the reflection in their sunglasses of the person on the motorbike ride away with their bag.

We find out that the bag is what they are talking about in the chorus of the song, to which they'll be coming back too. we also see in the video how the speed of the song is represented in the cuts and speed of the shots shown on the screen at that time. When a slow part of the song is playing, we are accompanied with slow, long cuts. But this changes when the song speeds up and the cuts become much shorter and faster.

When looking though the video, we don't see many long shots at all really. The odd few do show up but the video is very much close ups, helping the viewer know what is going on and see the expressions on the faces and the actions of their hands. We only ever see long shots when we see different angles of the cars turning and weaving.

Prelim task - School Music Video

Today we where asked to create a preliminary piece of work to see out we faced lip syncing. Because we where in out uniforms for school the song we where given was Busted's 'That's what I go to school for'. We where given a camera and see what we could do in an hour. After the footage was taken we logged on to the macs and attempted to try and sync both the music with the lip movements. The program that we used was iMovie as it's a recommended video development software and we felt best that we got used to the tools as this will be the program for our final video. After some confusion we finally figured it out and had solid music video with lip syncing within it.

My Group

Today we were asked to decide what groups we wanted to be in for our assignment so my close relationship and shared musical interests had to be taken in to account. In the end We decided the best group for us will be me, Scott Greenwood and Bradley Chick. This is because they are my close friends that I know we will be able I share ideas and making sure everyone is heard. However we do actually share the same interest in music so choosing the song for our video won't be be too much of a fuss which is always a bonus.

Types of Music Videos

Over the past ten years, the development of music videos in the music industry has grown and changed immensely. New technology, abstract images and fresh ideas have encouraged artist these days to expand how they represent themselves in their music videos. It is all headed towards 3 main typologies being:
  • Performance
  • Conceptual
  • Narrative
Performance
A performance video focuses on showing footage of the artist or band either in a casual environment such as socialising with friends, or performing, whether that be live performance or staged performance.

Concept
Concept videos based around a single idea or concept and are usually unusual and obscure, even surreal for the audience. The unusual context is an attraction to many customers, which draws them in.
A successful concept video will keep the audiences entertained and constantly looking at what or who is on the screen.

Narrative
A song with a narrative based music video the song includes a narrative story of the lyrics/words being acted out in some way. This style relies on imagery to produce a story for the audience to follow and some narrative videos include clips from films that the song has been featured in. This seems to be used a lot in slower songs, often love songs.

Andrew Goodwin's 6 features of music videos

In his book, Dancing in the distraction factory written in 1992, Andrew Goodwin believe there are only 6 key features to how a music video is created and brought to life. I felt it was best to use this theory and understand these features as this will help me develop and plan my very own video in a few months time. The 6 features are as followed:
1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
This is where to would see the same types of styles in the same genres for example a rapper would be commonly seen with jewellery and followed with a group and a dance routine for a boy or girl band.
this can be seen in the work of JLS, as the are a very typical boy band group, who perform in their videos and usually have a dance piece.
2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.
This is just as it's sounds. The story of the song is brought to life in the video and will follow the same pattern as the song whilst the artist plays the song. Ed Sheeran's 'Lego house' is an example of this.

3. There is a relationship with the music and the visuals.
Similar to the last one but this chooses to play the music with the visuals on screen moving along with that tune. Seen in 'Bounce' by Calvin Harris.

4. Making sure the 'Star' is utilised and seen by the public.
Music lately is all about the star image and more about the artist than the music they create. Well this is no different when the video is created. There will be close ups and common motifs which occur across their work to make sure that they are remembered. Seen most by artists like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga.

5. Frequent use or the notion of looking.
This is making sure that the viewers see what the person on screen is seeing. This is predominately used for men to look at the female body in some sexual expression. This was the case in 'What's My Name?' by Rhianna ft. Drake when Drake stares at Rhianna from behind in the supermarket.

6. Intertextual references
Music videos something make a reference to something else in television or music at that time or even the past that would only make sense if you know what they are referring too. This is also seen when there is a song from a films sound track and the video would feature scenes and references from the video. This is shown in the song "I See Fire" by Ed Sheeran, where the video shows clips of the film, "The Hobbit" as the song is played.

Introduction

After taking A level Media I have experienced planning and producing a Music magazine for a genre of my choice. This helped me greatly with a wide range of skills and the experience of professionalism with the world of media. Something that helped me definetely last year was the amount of research and planning that I had acounted for and this was my main source of production as what I researched was the core reason to why I produced anything on my own magazine. This year we have been set to produce a Music video again of our choice. Research and planning is something that cannot be squandered and must be taken seriously and for this assignment that's what I'll be doing. We where given a brief earlier this week in what has to be done for this assignment. The brief being 'a promotion package for the release of an album to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:
1) a website homepage for the band
2) a digipak for the albums release
3) a magazine advertisement for the digipak.
By December I hope to have had my research and planned completed with a clear outline of what we will be doing and a start will be made to the production of my music video. My main aim is to achieve level 4 for my research and planning and I go about doing that by making sure I have a regularly updated blog showing my progress througherly and keeping it as in depth as in possible. I also go about achieving a level 4 by making sure my communication skills with my peers and teachers is perfect, i need to make sure that we are all on the same page at the same time and to me that's key. Finally I feel that having my very own flavour and style to my blog is very necessary as it will be the style of the video as well. This will show my personality within the blog and the video itself. This is how I believe I can achieve a good level 4 piece of work.
